Johnson, Charles. A General History of the Pyrates, from Their First Riseand Settlement in the Island of Providence, to the Present Time (1724) Offered for auction is an antique copy of 1724 publication date. DESCRIPTION: Author Charles Johnson, a pseudonym for one presumably Daniel Defoe. Published T. Warner: London, 1724. Second Edition, Revised and Enlarged. Octavo, 427 pages, contemporary paneled calf, rebacked with a new spine which is chipped, front hinge broken, red morocco label on spine, extremities worn. Inked name of John Banks on the title dated 1733. scuffed. This work is a real treasure to pirate fans. Note: the thistle stamped device in the corner of the top panel might be a clue that would identify the original binder. There is a signature of a John Banks 1733 on the bottom of the title page. Would be desirable to identify which John Banks was the owner. This book deserves to be repaired by a sensitive book restorer (keep the spine label) who could match the covers. The 3 engravings are not present, which diminishes the value. One recent pristine copy sold for $10,000. Other less perfect copies have recently sold at auction for $3500-$6000.
