Up for auction is a rare victorian era diary written in the year 1850. The author is Emily Adeline Bailey esq. She was a a young women at the time most likely in her mid teens. She began writing her diary in December of 1850 with a final entry in May of 1851.The diary contains 130 numbered pages with writing in both sides of the sheets. The diary is still bound in marveled boards ,and measures 7.5 x 6 inches. This diary is a great example of what life was like for a young woman attending school in the 1850's.Another unique aspect is the diary is a folk art object. Miss Bailey added illustrated cutouts from newspapers, and handwritten comments with these illustrations. The style is similar to a collage in some respects. She also uses some handwritten decorations and flourishes around the titles of the page or months. ( see photos for details )Miss Bailey appears to have been from a well to do family or at least I get that impression. Some highlights from her diary: She mentions the life in town, life at school, debating club, singing club , attending lectures, Unitarian church, temperance meetings, her friends, and family, and much more. She mentions many names of the people who lived in her community, she gives you such detail about her life that its quite a joy to read. Further more she discusses the towns of Plymouth and Kingston Massachusetts. read more
