About This fine set of Mid 20th Century Solid Maple Philadelphia Style Rod Back Birdcage Windsor Chairs are in outstanding condition. The chairs show bamboo-style turnings, typical of the Chinese influences of the early 19th century. As seen in earlier Windsors, these chairs are constructed with saddle seats, and bamboo turnings. Made of Maple and finished in a light natural honey amber finish. The original Birdcage Windsor chair hearkens back to New England circa 1810, where popularity had shifted from the bow-backed Windsor chairs to those having a square-shaped back with the characteristic dainty-looking 'bamboo-style' turnings that give this chair style its name. These popular and comfortable chairs feature a modified New York style shield seat, as opposed to the Philadelphia's oval seat.Windsor chairs feature tapered joinery; weight on the seat of the chair causes the joints to strengthen, not loosen, as is the case in traditional tenon joinery. The strength and stability of the Windsor makes them a treasured American classic.Excellent Vintage/Used Condition!
