A very Retro SURPRISE Globe by Replogle This fab tin toy artifact allows you to discover the retro world of the 1950s but offers a surprise when you open it : The celestial view of our heavens! Discover the Great Dipper, Zodiacs and stars out of the convenience of you home, vintage style! A fantastic piece for any globe collector as this model comes complete, including original crayons and paper holder (of the crayons). Considering it being a Childs toy, this model is in magnificent and complete condition. As a matter of fact, until we obtained this model, we did not know that originally crayons had been part of this piece. Because this artifact is so rare (even for us!) we have a hard time parting with it. Several on our staff had argued to make it part of Omniterrum’s extensive Globe collection, which can be viewed in our shop Downtown Historic Lynchburg (in VA). However, we have a business to run and bills to pay.... This tin globe with original crayons is truly a gem and highlight of any collection. May it be for it fab retro look or complete package! In the 1950’s Reploge ventured out into producing a few unique tin globes, such as the Surprise Globe offered in this auction as well as a Magnetic Air Race Globe Game and the Quiz Globe, available in our store. With these neat and colorful models the manufacture attempted to compete with well known Children’s Tin Globe makers such as J.Chein and Ohio Art. However, Replogle did not make these Children’s models for very long. It is difficult to locate these models, as they had to endure (and survive!) child’s play. This one barely did. And even though it carries the scars of being a child’s toy, it still (or maybe because of it) quite an attractive piece and conversation starter! About the manufacture: Replogle 1930 – current Chicago Luther Replogle, a former sales rep for Weber Costello and Denoyer - Geppert, began making globes in his basement with imported British map gores. The breakthrough for his company occurred in 1932, when he obtained the contract to produce commutative globes for the worlds fair in Chicago in 1933, distributed by Marshall Fields & Co. During WW2 Replogle did not keep up with the constant change of political borders and continued printing the maps of 1939 through the early 1940’s. However, to encourage customers to continue purchasing his globes, he offered coupons for globes to be updated for a minimal fee once WW2 has ended and political borders have been established. In the 1950’s Reploge ventured out into producing a few very unique globes, such as the Surprise Globe, the Wonder World as well as a Magnetic Air Race Globe Game and the Quiz Globe. It was an attempt to expand sales into the toy market while competing with well known Children’s Tin Globe makers such as J.Chein and Ohio Art. Today Replogle is one of the worlds largest Globe manufacture. Description: The orb itself is made of hollow tin. The exterior litho offers black oceans, offset by bold color lands, sitting on a tomato red tin base and displaying a red wooden knob at the North Pole. But the surprise is offered by the interior. The orb can be opened into two hemispheres, connected through a hinge. The interior, colored in deep as well as light blue, white and red, it displays the celestial hemispheres, showing stars, constellations, zodiacs and nebulas. Crayons are held in place by a circular card board which sits horizontal in the orb. The graphics and font on the cardboard holder are very retro in style! Diameter of the globe is 6 inches with a total height of about 10 inches. Condition: The Globe has been extremely well maintained. Colors are bold, details crisp and only a few minor scuff marks. No rust, dents, fading or cracks. It has a slightly un-even alignment when closed. The same for the interior litho.
